The next generations of Mini’s were launched for the Indian market in November of last year and it only seemed a matter of time before the parent company BMW began bringing in the sportier models of the iconic British manufacturer. It has now announced that it will launch the sporty Cooper S model for the Indian market on March 16.
Exterior
The Mini Cooper S shares much of the overall design with its standard siblings but gets a host of cosmetic changes to separate it from the standard car. Some of these changes include a redesigned black radiator grille with a honeycomb design, air intakes on the lower bumper and an air scoop on the bonnet. The black roof and the softly flared wheel arches complement the hatchback’s low-slung and purposeful stance. The Mini Cooper S also sports a host of trademark red ‘S’ logos, which set it apart from the standard variants.
Interior
The cabin of the Mini Cooper S is exactly the same as the standard car right down to the feature list. While this may not be much of a selling point with Indian customers, it is expected that Mini will offer a large number of personalisation options so that each Mini will be specific to their owner.
Engine and gearbox
The new Mini Cooper S will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 192bhp and 280Nm of torque. While the European market also gets the option of a six-speed manual, we in India will only get the six-speed steptronic AT.
Price and competition
The Mini range slots into a niche segment in India and so the only major rival for this vehicle is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and when launched the Fiat Abarth 500. It is expected to be priced Rs five lakh more than the standard Mini.
